ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Three groups from two communities are recreating Wellman Summer Lunch into an accessible, fun, and educational place to be.

Erin Ramer of Wellman Summer Lunch, Julie Brophy Gordinier of Feed the Kids Mid-Prairie (school food pantries and weekend backpack program), and Amy Spencer of Food for All (Kalona Summer Lunch and Sunday Suppers) are transitioning the current Wellman lunch into a sit-down and take-out lunch for people of all ages, with prizes, crafts, great food, and a literacy program.

“We felt that the Kalona Summer Lunch model, averaging 50 guests a day last summer, would be an effective one for Wellman too” Spencer said. “So far the Wellman lunch has been a bag-lunch handout rather than a social gathering like we have in Kalona.”
