ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Wednesday’s school board meeting began on a high note. Principal Regan Stone announced that the high school had been awarded a STEM Scale-Up Program grant for computer science principles. The grant will enable Jessica Howard, who teaches business and computer classes, to design and teach classes in computer coding at the high school level.

STEM is a curriculum based on teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in an interdisciplinary and applied approach. The emphasis on the interdisciplinary teaching of STEM subjects was part of the Obama administration’s 2009 “Educate to Innovate” to address the shortage of teachers in these fields and the ever increasing number of jobs requiring a STEM education.

With regard to computers, the board decided to accept a bid for managed services for the school’s computers from Corridor Technology Professionals even though their bid was higher than bids submitted by Infrastructure Technology Solutions and Grant Wood, because Corridor Technology Professionals had been providing this service for several years and the school was satisfied with the service.

With regard to broadening student horizons through participation, the school board is considering adding a student school board representative beginning next September. The position would be non-voting. The primary responsibilities would be to provide input and to communicate to the student body the decisions of the board.

With regard to the Lone Tree teacher contracts for 2018-2019, the agreed upon increase in salary will be 1.7 percent. Compensation for non-teaching staff will be considered later. Superintendent Crawford is proposing a labor management problem solving committee. He feels that participation by all parties is “a good thing.”
