ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Kalona

The 31st President of the United States, the first one born west of the Mississippi River, never forgot his hometown, visiting it often. He made West Branch the site of his presidential library/museum, dedicating an elementary school there and choosing it as the final resting place for himself and his wife.

Saturday, Aug. 5, just five days short of the 143rd anniversary of Hoover’s birth, more than 200 people gathered at the elementary named for him for the unveiling ceremony of a statue that concluded a 12-year project.

The bronze statute, designed and created by Steve Maxon and Doris Park of MaxCast in Kalona, also is the first outdoor public statue of West Branch’s most famous native son. The other Hoover statutes are all within the Hoover Library and Museum.
