ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree Track teams opened the season at the Central College meets on Friday and Saturday in Pella.

Jovonte Squiers led the Lone Tree boys on Friday with a second place finish in the long jump with a distance of 20-08.5.

It was a talented field as Keegan Rich, a 3A-state qualifier from Mount Pleasant, finished fifth. Squires was edged by half an inch by 3A Carlisle’s Dallas Wright, who took first.

Niko Gosnell had a sixth place finish in the 60-meter hurdles, his first time running the event.

“Before the season, I asked him about his ideas on the 110 (meter) hurdles and I don’t know if he was real hip on it,” coach Caylon Devaul said. “I think he’s going to like them when he starts doing well, and he’s going to do well in them.”

Squiers qualified for the finals in the 60-meter dash and finished seventh out of 198 runners with a time of 7.47. Drake Hotz also finished seventh in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.14.

“(Drake) actually got seventh at our meet Friday in the 200 (meter dash) out of 164 people,” Devaul said.

“He cut half a second off of his best time from last year running indoor, and I think running indoor is a lot harder.”

Gosnell and Squiers finished eighth and ninth in the 400-meter dash and Ross Swinton finished ninth in the mile.

On Saturday, the Lone Tree girls had a 12th place finish with the 4x800 meter relay of Natalie Patterson, Macie Bopp, Sydney Alt and Karli Burr. Emily Feldman had the top individual result with a 22nd place finish in the 60-meter hurdles. Kaycee Kane finished 27th in the shot put and Holley Johnson took 29th in the 400-meter dash.
