ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree’s stout defense put in four quarters of hard work, but the offense couldn’t follow it up with points as Danville defeated Lone Tree 56-20 in their season opener.

The Lady Lion defense used their zone to effectively clog up the lane early and force outside shots from Danville. That worked, but the Danville defense did the same thing right back and forced three Lone Tree turnovers in the first three possessions of the game.

The pace continued, but at the halfway point of the first quarter Danville led by a score of 4-0. Lone Tree took a timeout to discuss breaking the press and how to set up their offense. At that point Lone Tree had attempted only one field goal. The first points of the quarter for Lone Tree came with just 10 seconds left in the quarter as Holley Johnson nailed a baseline jumper as the quarter came to an end.

Danville adjusted to Lone Tree’s pressure in the second half and were able to start using Lone Tree turnovers to create easy points in the fast break. Lone Tree added six points in the second quarter with four coming on free throws to put the Lions at a 28-8 deficit at halftime.

Danville started the third quarter on a 10-2 run before Lone Tree got a bucket on a drive from Casey Chown who was fouled and made her free throw. That followed by a Johnson drive to the basket made the score 42-15 at the end of the third quarter.

Lone Tree added five points in the final quarter of play as Danville boosted their lead to 30-plus points and won 56-20.

Chown was the scoring leader for Lone Tree with six points on 1-2 shooting and 4-5 from the free-throw line. Chown led the team in rebounds with six. Ashley Musser had three steals and Sara Branson had the team’s lone assist on the night. Branson and Chloe Jacque each grabbed a pair of offensive rebounds.

The Lions were 4-33 from the field and 0-7 from behind the 3-point line.
