ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Highland school board Monday approved circulating a petition calling for a school bond election.

There still is not a final figure for how much the bond request will be.

The current estimate is $2.6 million to pay for unifying heating and air conditioning systems at the high school and middle school, adding to two sections of the high school and installing a new handicap-accessible playground at the elementary school.

As of Monday evening, Superintendent Ken Crawford said the district does not know how many petition signatures will be needed to qualify the measure for the ballot. That number will come when the district gets the petitions to begin circulating them.

The initial price tag on the playground, one of the things the board wanted before circulating the petitions, came in higher than expected. The original estimates were for $200,000, but in a presentation by Maria Meller representing the school ESO, the board heard that the playground could cost $316,000, which would include resurfacing the preschool playground.

The motion to begin circulating the petitions was approved on a 6-0 vote with Mike Golden absent.
