ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Up just one point after a Lone Tree comeback in the second half, Meredith Blossom hit her biggest shot yet and started Iowa Mennonite on a 13-3 run on the way to a 57-46 victory.

“It is great to see her hit a shot like that in a crucial time,” Iowa Mennonite coach Kari Heusinkveld said. “That really just made us rally, like, hey we can do this.”

It was the only shot of the night for Blossom, but came at a time where they desperately needed a bucket. It was also showing Iowa Mennonite’s transformation into a more balanced offense.

Heusinkveld said this was the first time since she started coaching at Iowa Mennonite with four players scoring seven or more points. Suzanna Yoder scored 25, Mia Graber had a career-high 15, Yani Gutierrez scored eight and Rubye Ney scored seven.

Iowa Mennonite took a six-point lead into halftime, but Lone Tree came out in the third quarter and tied things up.

“At the end of the third quarter I really challenged them because we didn’t take care of the things we needed to and they responded,” Heusinkveld said.

Part of Lone Tree’s resurgence came from owning the offensive glass in the second half. Lone Tree nearly had as many offensive rebounds (17) as they did defensive rebounds (18) during the game. That effort was led by Kasey Chown who had seven and Ashley Musser who grabbed three.

The scoring was spread out for Lone Tree, but led by Ashley Musser with 14 points including a few huge 3-pointers in the second half. The Lions had eight scorers and at least six with two field goals.

The season sweep for Iowa Mennonite marks the first time Iowa Mennonite has swept the Lady Lions in SEISC play in over a decade. Iowa Mennonite now has a 7-6 record while Lone Tree sits at 1-12.

Box Score

Iowa Mennonite: 15; 12; 12; 18; 57
