ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie wrestling’s long week is over.

The Golden Hawk wrestling team hit the mat three times last week and some Golden Hawks had more than 10 matches wrestled by the time the week ended. They rounded out the week with a fourth place team finish at the Jeremy Fulk Classic in New London.

The week ended strongly for Isaac Boucher at 220 pounds and Colton Allen at 195 pounds with first place individual finishes.

“I thought they both wrestled really well. Isaac had a great day, he’s had a really good week actually so it was great to see him come out and get the title today,” Mid-Prairie wrestling coach Justin Garvey said.

Boucher had a 7-2 record on the week capped off with three pins in three matches at the New London tournament.

Garvey also praised Colton Allen’s performance in the final.

“It was good to see Colton turn the corner in the third period. They kind of battled back and forth through the first two, but then the sense of urgency came through where he got the escape, got the takedown and back points,” Garvey said.

Colton Allen’s final against New London’s Jaxon Allen was deadlocked at 2-2 at the start of the third period. Colton Allen chose the down position to start before collecting an escape, a takedown and then a 3-point near fall to win the match 8-2.

Allen advanced to the final by an 11-2 decision over West Burlington Notre Dame’s Drayton Lavine.

Cory Allen at 182 pounds and Vinnie Bowlin at 138 pounds advanced to the finals but dropped their match, Garvey said Bowlin has shown a ton of improvement over the week. Cory Allen was pinned in 33 seconds and Bowlin lost his match 16-6.

“Vinnie Bowlin at 138 pounds in the semi-finals beat a ranked kid, a senior from New London, so to get into the finals was a big accomplishment,” Garvey said. “Then he comes up against another ranked senior from Eddyville and wrestled a tough match.”

David Murray placed third at 145 pounds and Miles Burrows placed fourth at 152 pounds. Garvey said they wrestled well but just had a few things to clean up that could have been the difference in matches.

“The biggest thing for those two guys is not finishing their offense, once they get to that point I think things will really improve,” Garvey said.

Ashton Bush (120 pounds), Dallas Miller (126 pounds), Josh Wallington (182 pounds)and Michael Kelly (285 pounds) placed fifth. Three Mid-Prairie wrestlers were at 170 pounds as Elisha Sir-Louis placed fourth, Beau Stutzman fifth and Dominic McCain sixth.

Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont took the team title at the event.
