Wellman will be officially welcoming a new utility clerk in 2018.

Cindy Thrapp will be taking over for former clerk Chris Huston to begin the new year. Thrapp said she’s been working with Huston since July, so she should hit the ground running in her new role.

“She’s very accustomed to working with the public,” Huston said. “She’ll do fine.”

Huston said she and her husband are looking forward to doing some traveling now that she’s retired, but doesn’t have anything planned quite yet.

Before working for the City of Wellman, Thrapp was a ticket manager at the University of Iowa’s Iowa Memorial Union box office. Thrapp said she left the university at a time when major changes were happening and most of her co-workers had opted to take early retirement.

“When I left the university, I was helping at Wellman Senior Dining and found out about the position, so I applied,” Thrapp said. “I wanted to get back to my community and it was nice to get rid of my commute. I grew up in Wellman and have lived here all my life.”

Wellman city clerk Beth VanWinkle said she also thought Thrapp would do well.

“She’s brought some good things with her,” VanWinkle said. “She seems to know everybody in the community and she helps out a lot.”

Thrapp said she’s ready for the job.

“Customer service is my thing, I’ve done it all my life,” she said. “Except now I’ll be working with bills instead of concert tickets.”
