A number of issues dealing with the Highland School Distirct’s relationship with Lone Tree were up for discussion and action August 14.

The districts spelled out all the classes that were available for students in one district to take in the other. Included in the agreement are classes categorized as vocational ag education, business education, family and consumer science, construction, technology classes, and agriculture mechanics.

One aspect that will change this year, is Highland will have their own ag teacher. Underclassmen will stay at Highland for the ag course, while upperclassmen can continue at Lone Tree as they have done in the past.

The move allowed Highland to only buy a car for school transport and may save them money on a shuttle. The cross country teams will also share rides to the six meets they share on their schedule in the name of savings.

To further increase cooperation efforts, the boards will meet for a joint work session at Lone Tree August 28 to discuss further ways to share in the future. Board President Kevin Engel said he was approached by his counterpart in Lone Tree and brought it to the board.

“The goal is to keep both districts independent, but helping each other out …to try to save money so they can stay independent,” Engel said of the conversation.

The other board members were highly receptive to the idea, as was Superintendent Mike Jorgensen.

“I have found (Lone Tree Superintendent) Mr. (Ken) Crawford to be very receptive to thoughts and ideas. We’ve talked a lot already,” he said.
