ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A year and a half into the elementary school realignment, Mid-Prairie administrators say that the change is going well.

East Elementary Principal Robin Foster and West Elementary Principal Bill Poock reported to the school board Monday on the successes and challenges of the realignment that began last year.

Poock said one difference he has noticed is that there is now little talk of “Wellman kids” or “Kalona kids.”

He noted that at the beginning of last year, there were some cliques that developed based on the cities where students lived, and that some conflicts arose from that.

“We’re not seeing that now,” Poock said.

Beginning with the 2017-18 school year, West Elementary in Wellman houses third grade and fourth grade. East Elementary in Kalona houses kindergarten, first grade and second grade. Both schools house pre-kindergarten and kindergarten classes.

School board member Gabrielle Frederick said that she has only heard positive comments about the realignment.

“Every comment I’ve heard is positive,” she said.

Both Foster and Poock said that they, too, have not heard negative feedback about realignment, but conceded there have been some challenges.

Foster said transition is difficult for some students.
