ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

BOONE - On Friday, the IHSAA announced that former Mid-Prairie basketball coach Don Showalter will be inducted into the IHSAA basketball Hall of Fame.

Showalter is 12th on the all-time Iowa coach’s win list with a record of 601-346 over 42 seasons. Showalter and four other coaches and eight players will be honored at the 2017 State Tournament in Des Moines.

“Obviously, I am honored and humbled to receive the Hall of Fame recognition by the Iowa High School Athletic Association,” Showalter said.

“An award like this only comes about due to many people, including a long list of Mid-Prairie players who were outstanding to work with, an outstanding and supportive administration at Mid-Prairie, great assistant coaches: Chris Kern, Kelby Bender, Bud Bender, Dave Schlabaugh, and a community that was very supportive of our basketball program.”

Showalter made his first trip to the state tournament with Central Elkader in 1982, and made six more trips during his 28 seasons with Mid-Prairie. He had a 446-202 record as head coach of the Golden Hawks.

“Having been a player at Mid-Praire, and then a coach for 28 years has been a big part of my basketball career, and a major part of this Hall of Fame award,” Showalter said.

Showalter is currently the USA Basketball National Director for Coach Development and the USA basketball National U16-U17 team coach.

Recently, his U17 squad defeated Turkey 96-56 in the 2016 World Championship game. It was Showalter’s eighth Gold Medal, and his USA Basketball record now stands at 45-0.
