June 13, 2019 Hundreds helped search for Colton Allen

The search for a missing 16-year-old Mid-Prairie High School junior ended with a grim discovery on the afternoon of June 6.

The body of Colton Allen was found in a pond east of the 1500 block of Highway 1 about 4½ miles south of Kalona at 1:30 p.m., according to the Washington County Sheriff’s Department.

Allen was reported missing at 7:42 p.m., June 5 after disappearing from a gathering at the pond.

The sheriff’s office reported that he was last seen around 6 p.m., wearing only a swimsuit. His cellphone was left at the gathering.

Hundreds of volunteers searched until after 1 a.m., Thursday and resumed after dawn Thursday morning.

The sheriff’s office said that in addition to the volunteers, several agencies from multiple jurisdictions took part in the search.

“On Thursday after everything, when they wanted volunteers, it was like there were almost too many people,” said Jack Baker, one of Allen’s Mid-Prairie classmates. “I think that’s the difference being in a small community like Kalona, Wellman versus a bigger city. Crazy to see how many people came to see how they could help.”

No further information has been released.
