Spring is here and it’s time to clean the dead stuff out of the downtown flower beds.

This task has been done since the flower beds were installed by a group of volunteers informally referred to as the “Corner Crew”.

Lone Tree has had such flower gardens on and off at least since the turn of the last century.

Back then, the first view passengers disembarking from the train had of Lone Tree were the beautiful gardens in Railroad Park.

There was a proposal to revive the custom in 2006 and put in gardens up and down Devoe (Main St) but it didn’t come to be until 2010 when Devoe was torn up, water mains and sewer lines repaired and updated, and the street repaved.

A committee, led by Sherry Ogren, Helen Lemley, and Julie Poeltler convinced City Council not to pave over the six corners of downtown. Dirt was brought in, flowers planted, and every summer a group of volunteers and elementary students recruited from the school plants and maintains these gardens.

Sherry Ogren, the informal leader of the group, made it clear that volunteers are welcome.

And anyone spotting trash in the flower beds should feel free to pick it up and properly dispose of it. Her pet peeve, however, is not the occasional pop can. It’s cigarette butts. So all you smokers out there, please don’t flip your butts into the flower beds.
