1949 - 2018

Lynn E. Merck, 69, died Sunday, Nov.11, 2018, at Pleasantview Home in Kalona. A celebration of life will be held Thursday, Nov.15, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at Kalona United Methodist Church with Pastor Gerry Kahler officiating. Burial will follow with full military honors at Sharon Hill Cemetery, Kalona. Visitation will be held Wednesday, Nov. 14 from 2 – 7 p.m. at the Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona. A memorial fund has been established for Iowa City Hospice, Kalona United Methodist Church and Pleasantview Home.

Lynn Eugene Merck was born June 13, 1949, in Sigourney, Iowa, the son of Eugene and Ellen (Rank) Merck. He graduated from Montezuma High School and Iowa State University, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in agriculture education. Lynn served in the Iowa Army National Guard from 1971 - 1978. On Nov. 30, 1985, he was united in marriage to Donna Yoder at the Kalona United Methodist Church.

Lynn worked at Moorman Feed as a sales rep and for Cenex Land O’Lakes as plant manager. In the mid 1990s he began farming and continued until illness no longer permitted. Lynn was a faithful member of the Kalona United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on several committees. He was also a past president and lieutenant governor of the Kalona Optimist Club. He enjoyed being at the farm, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends.

Survivors include his wife: Donna of Kalona; three children: Jeannie (Christian) Zulauf of Ottumwa, Michelle Merck of Des Moines, and Ryan (Kate) Merck of Wellman; his grandson: Trevin; his mother: Ellen Merck of Grinnell; two sisters: Becky Schlesselman of Grinnell and Jo (Steve) Wiley of New Sharon; a foster brother: Dwaine Gooding of Burlington; two brothers-in-law: Marlin (Judy) Yoder of McLeansville, N.C., and Harlan (Mary) Yoder of North Liberty; and one sister-in-law: Deanna (Carl) Poe of Kalona.

Preceding Lynn in death was his father: Eugene and one brother-in-law: David Schlesselman.
