July 27 will be Merlyn Yoder Day in Wellman.

The celebration will be bittersweet. July 27 is the day that RAGBRAI rolls into town.

Yoder was one of the first community volunteers to help plan and organize the RAGBRAI festivities in Wellman. He traveled to Ames for a statewide meeting to help communities plan for the annual bike ride that will draw at least 10,000 bike riders to Wellman, and perhaps thousands more. He was active in the community planning meetings in the town.

That involvement ended May 7, when Yoder was killed in a farming accident May 7.

Wellman City Councilman and RAGBRAI Committee Chairman Mark Philpot introduced a proclamation Monday night to designate July 27 as Merlyn Yoder Day “to coincide with the arrival of RAGBRAI to the City of Wellman.”

Because the proclamation was not listed on the agenda, the council could not vote on the honor Monday night, but Mayor Ryan Miller said he would issue the proclamation.

“I thought it would be fitting and appropriate to honor him,” Philpot said.

Philpot read the proclamation at the meeting Monday.

“In recognition of Merlyn Keith Yoder’s selfless service to the success of an event that would cause great positive impact on the community of Wellman, Iowa, and its citizens, it is deemed fitting and appropriate that the Mayor and City Council of said municipality should designate July 27, 2018, as Merlyn Yoder Day in Wellman to coincide with the arrival of RAGBRAI to the City of Wellman,” the proclamation reads.
