Iowa Mennonite’s soccer season came to an end with a 4-0 loss to eventual Class 1A runner-up Des Moines Christian school.

Coming into the game, Iowa Mennonite knew that Des Moines Christian’s offense was absolutely relentless. The Lions had two players that had combined for 81 goals on the season, three more than Iowa Mennonite’s season total.

Des Moines Christian’s Ben Webster, who led the state this season with 61 goals, scored the first of three goals during the game just five minutes in. From the first touch, Des Moines Christian seemed to always be on the attack.

“I think that first five minutes we were a little jittery,” Iowa Mennonite head coach Marcus Miller said.

He said that the speed they were able to put up in their front line allowed them to keep an extra player dropped on defense to stop the Iowa Mennonite attack as well.

“They kept a lot of guys back, and they always had a body on Louis (Etienne),” Miller said.

The score was pushed to 2-0 after Webster struck again, this time with just 2:30 left in the first half. Going into halftime, the Iowa Mennonite squad still knew they could have a chance and Reggie Borntrager said they made some adjustments that helped on the defensive end.

“We changed the formation of our defense and offense to see if we could get some better chances,” Borntrager said.

“We wanted to put more pressure on them, which I think we did, but some things just didn’t go our way.”
