September 27, 2018 Kids in the Kitchen club starts cooking at M-P East

Kids in the Kitchen is a new after school club to teach members to have kitchen sense and safety while they learn about the major food groups and making healthy choices for their growing bodies.

Members will explore the tasty fun of the kitchen through new recipes each week, while including topics such as the basics of food and kitchen safety, healthy recipe substitutes, snacks-on-the-go, meal planning and serving etiquette.

They will exercise together, cook together and have fun together for six weeks.

Washington County Extension is bringing this program to Mid-Prairie schools with a donation from Kalona Rotary to help support costs involved.

This club will be open to Mid-Prairie East Elementary second-grade students. Flyers will be sent home in backpacks this week, but registration forms are also available on the Extension website at

The club will be held Tuesdays after school until 4:45 p.m. in the school’s art room. It will run every Tuesday from Nov. 6 – Dec. 11.

It is open to any second -grader who wants to learn more about healthy living, eating and moving. The Kids in the Kitchen curriculum is a product of Iowa 4-H.

Registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis until Oct. 22 at the Mid-Prairie East Elementary School office or the Washington County Extension office. There are limited spots available.

There is a $10 fee due with the registration. Youth are not required to be a Clover Kid/4-H member.
