ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The first of two community input meetings were held in the Highland Community School Ainsworth Elementary gym June 4 to receive input from city and area residents on their preferences for the future of the building,

Mayor Troy McCarthy’s main concern was the shoestring budget that the city had to operate on. Even if the building and grounds, including the ball field, were either gifted or purchased by the city for $1, McCarthy estimated maintenance costs for the building would be around $20,000 if it went bare bones.

Money could be saved by demolishing the new part of the building and leaving the gym, two old classrooms and the kitchen, but that also came with an up-front price tag of around $56,000.

It was estimated that the city could pay the costs to maintain the building for about a year, before they would run out of funding, so the mayor wanted to gauge the overall thought process of the community, as well as get ideas for possible income sources if the city were to try to make things work.
