IOWA CITY--Highland's Madison Thomann and Iowa Mennonite's Leah Bontrager are headed to the state meet.

Thomann, who finished in fourth place overall with a time of 21:32, and Bontrager, who finished in 14th with a time of 22:14, beat out a field of talented runners from a dearth of Class 1A schools to advance.

It will be the first state meet experience for both runners. Bontrager, a freshman, is the first qualifier for Iowa Mennonite since 2014. Thomann, a sophomore, is the second girls qualifier in school history.

Highland finished fifth as a team and Iowa Mennonite was seventh.

Lone Tree's Macie Bopp finished 20th overall in 22:42, missing a state meet spot by five places. Other close finishers included Sarena Gerber in 26th and Taylor Sublette in 27th.

There were no boys qualifiers from the Iowa City Regina meet. Iowa Mennonite's top finisher was Brian Nchoe in 27th, Lone Tree's Alberto Cortes was 53rd and Highland's Jacob Roling was 68th.

Iowa Mennonite was 10th in the team race, Lone Tree was 15th and Highland was 20th.

Read reactions from the qualifiers and a state meet preview in next week's newspaper.
