ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Mid-Prairie senior Paige Slabaugh qualified for the state meet next week as an individual, shooting an 84 at the regional golf meet in Oskaloosa.

“Paige had another strong round individually and I’m happy that she’ll get her chance at state,” Mid-Prairie coach Tracy McArtor said. “I know she is excited to have the opportunity.”

The Class 2A state meet will take place at Lake Panorama National Golf Course on May 29 and 30.

“I think the course will set up nicely for her,” McArtor said. “It will probably play a touch longer than most of the courses we play, but with Paige’s length and the experience she has playing a number Junior PGA events, it won’t be anything she hasn’t seen before.”

While Slabaugh is moving on as an individual, that means the team’s season has come to an end. They shot 408 as a team, coming in 31 strokes behind Williamsburg for the final team spot at the state tournament.

McArtor said the wet, soggy course alongside a few bad holes at the start hurt the Golden Hawks team score.

“The back nine on this course has some tricky holes and if you’re not careful can throw a big number on your card quickly and, unfortunately, that seemed to be the case today,” McArtor said.

For the team Slabaugh led the way with an 84; Abbi Patterson shot a 103; Abigail Statler a 110; and Georgia Nisly a 111. Also golfing on the day were Emma Mattes with a 112 and Kendra Schaefer with a 116.

McArtor said the team “worked their tails off this year and have nothing to be disappointed about.”

He said the future looks bright because five of the six golfers from the regional meet will return next year.

“We will miss the senior leadership that Paige brings to this team and her work ethic, but the success and experience the entire team had this year will be a great building block for next season,” McArtor said.
