After 55 years of service to the area, Murphy Field is shutting down for good later this fall.

Harold Murphy, who built the airstrip on his father’s farm three miles south of Wellman on Gingko Avenue, said Monday that he expects it to be closed by Nov. 1.

“I’m getting old, and all things must come to an end,” Murphy said. “It’s reverting back to farmland.”

Murphy built the airstrip in 1963. For 10 years, the city of Wellman leased it, and it was known as the Wellman Airport.

After that, the airstrip has been known as Murphy Field.

“We had a 20-member flying club there for several years,” Murphy said. “Spray planes used to use it, too. We even had a couple of emergency landings there.”

Murphy said that lately he has not been using the airstrip.

“I don’t have an airplane right now,” he said.

He added that there is still one airplane based at the airstrip, but they will be moving that in the near future.
