The Wellman City Council gave its seal of approval to plans for a disc golf course at North Park.

The vote at Monday night’s meeting was actually an OK to apply for a $2,000 Riverboat Foundation grant to help with the cost of the course.

The remainder of the cost of building the disc golf course will be raised with sponsorships for each hole.

“We believe we have enough donors to pay for the entire course,” City Administrator Kelly Litwiller told the council.

The plan was developed by Wellman resident Teresa Lampe and includes holes throughout North Park.

The cost will be for baskets on poles – the holes that the discs are thrown into – and 8-foot-by-4-foot cement pads for tees.

The park already has about three holes that utilize plastic bins. The new course would be more permanent and durable.

In addition to the Riverboat grant application, organizers will solicit donations from businesses in the city to sponsor the holes. Litwiller said the cost of hole sponsorships is still being determined.

The city administrator added that the money and development of the course will be managed by either the city or the chamber of commerce.

“It would be nice if it is a chamber project,” Mayor Ryan Miller said.
