ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

DES MOINES — The Mid-Prairie girls distance medley relay won the state title on Friday afternoon with a time of 4:10.96.

The group of Amber Swart, Cassidy Rourke, Marie Hostetler and Anna Hostetler came in as the top-ranked team and left with the title in the medley consisting of two 200 meter segments, one 400 meter segment and one 800 meter segment.

Swart normally runs the second leg of the race, but an injury put her in the blocks and Rourke on the second leg. That amplified the nerves she was feeling before the race.

“It's a little freaky, I'm not awesome at blocks and I usually never use them. So knowing that I have to use these at state and do well at them was a little scary,” Swart said.

The Mid-Prairie freshman had a good start, and sped off to hand the baton to Rourke. Rourke, a junior, kept pace with the pack and handed the baton off to Marie Hostetler.

Marie Hostetler kept pace with the lead group and after her leg handed the baton off to Anna Hostetler with Mid-Prairie in sixth place.

“I had all my confidence in Anna, there wasn't a doubt in my mind that she'd catch them,” Rourke said. “I was just waiting for her to make her move. It's really exciting and fun to watch.”

With around 200 meters left, Anna Hostetler started her final surge that brought the Golden Hawks the victory.

“It was a confidence booster that even if you have a bad race you can come back and have a good race. It's just a lot like life, you have setbacks and then you overcome them,” Hostetler said.

Starting in sixth place isn’t a position Hostetler often finds herself in, but when she got the baton she said knowing her teammates had all worked so hard all season that she had to try and make the comeback.

“I just wanted to go out there and just try,” she said. “I may not be able to do it, but I wanted to try. I wanted to try for my team, I'm so proud of them and they ran so awesome.”

The win was Mid-Prairie’s only girls event on Friday. They will run in the sprint medley, the 800 and 1500. In the 800 and 1500 Mid-Prairie has two entries in Anna Hostetler and Marie Hostetler.
