ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

After coming home from the state track meet with a fourth place medal from the distance medley relay, Elmir Ganibegovic didn’t have time to enjoy the accomplishment. He was back on the pitch practicing for Mid-Prairie’s substate game against South Tama County.

As the Golden Hawks dropped the game 3-0, Ganibegovic saw the end of a busy spring season come to an end. In addition to being on the track and soccer teams, he was selected to the Iowa All-State Jazz Band for his work on the saxophone.

“It has been really tough, honestly. It’s been just a lot of communicating with coaches, and trying to figure out what I need to come to at what day,” Ganibegovic said.

He said at the beginning of the season he had a little doubt about the ability to do all three competitively, but as the season went on he saw the benefits.

“As I started doing well in both I think it just started balancing better and the coaches were super understanding,” Ganibegovic said.

He said that as the soccer season moved on, his position changed from forward to outside midfield. He said with that position, his work with the track team allowed him to chase down balls faster and beat defenders, while the need to take off quickly at a moment’s notice helped him learn to get moving quickly.

And while it won’t be quite as crazy of a schedule, Ganibegovic is headed right into the next thing. His summer plans include hitting the weight room, playing club soccer and continuing to get better at saxophone.

“So I’m going to be lifting every day in summer and it’s something I really want to improve on,” he said.

After one season of the hectic schedule, would he do it again?

“No question.”
