ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Mid-Prairie boys team battled a hot day at the Solon Invitational to place eighth in the 11-team field.

Led by a 25th-place finish from Quinn Schmidt, the Golden Hawks scored a 233 on the day by going 25-44-48-52-64. First place at the event was Clear Creek-Amana with a score of 32.

The Mid-Prairie team on Monday featured a mix of youth and seniors.

Thaddeus Shetler finished as Mid-Prairie’s No. 2 in 44th at a time of 19:25. Samson Kimani was 48th at 19:35. Spency Yutzy was 52nd at 19:47.

Mid-Prairie assistant coach Aaron Fleming said Yutzy has been progressing well this season.

“Spencer is growing in his quiet leadership and his toughness and determination are a big key to how the team is progressing,” Fleming said.

The three ran in a pack for much of the race, and Kimani said that’s a strength of the team.

“Having those guys near me helps keep my pace. It not only helps mentally with just time and knowing how fast I should go, but also emotionally and knowing that we’re passing guys together,” Kimani said.

Chandler Hershberger rounded out the varsity scoring in 64th place at 20:29.

Non-scoring members included Jamison Stutzman at 69th in 21:25 and Luke Albright at 75th in 25:22.

The junior varsity boys finished 10th on the day and were led by Elmir Ganibegovic at 21:52.

“Elmir Ganibegovic continues to improve, earning himself a spot on the varsity squad for the next meet by leading the junior varsity squad,” Fleming said.

Camden Marner was right behind Ganibegovic at 22:02. Levi Stultz was 60th at 23:35. Then came a pack of Mid-Prairie runners finishing in spots 65 through 68.

Austin Bontrager was 65th at 25:20, Evan Hall 66th at 26:20, Ty Carey 67th at 26:29 and Ethan Hall 68th at 27:36.

Fleming said it was a “breakthrough day” for Ethan Hall who broke 30 minutes for the first time.
