A bonfire to kick off homecoming week in Lone Tree was in doubt Tuesday morning after the City Council did not approve an exception to the city’s burn ban.

The bonfire was scheduled for Saturday from 6-10 p.m. in the parking lot near the city’s Community Building.

The council had a number of concerns: city liability, health issues posed by the smoke for surrounding residents and a city resident who had complained to City Hall after seeing advertising for the event.

“Someone already saw the posting, was against it and communicated to us,” Councilwoman Ruby Dickey said.

The issue was late coming to the council. Mayor Jonathan Green said he waited to put it on a council agenda until he tracked down all of the details.

That put pressure on the council to approve the event that had been advertised on fliers, in the school announcements and on Facebook.

“My biggest concern is the late development of this,” Councilman Tyler Baird said.

Green apologized for not notifying the council when he first heard about the bonfire two months ago.

There still may be a bonfire. Bryan Edwards, an organizer of the event that benefits the school’s post-prom event, said he would try to find another location. Any change would be announced on the school’s Facebook page.
