ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

School and law enforcement officials are looking to curb the wrong-way parking problem by Mid-Prairie East Elementary School.

Washington County deputies have issued a number of warnings in recent weeks to drivers parking the wrong way on H Avenue while dropping children off at the school.

“On the north side of the elementary school, people are coming from the east and crossing into the westbound lane to drop off kids at the curb,” Sheriff Jared Schneider said. “First we issued some verbal warnings, and now we’ve had some written warnings.”

Kalona city ordinance 64.03 states, “No person shall make a left-hand turn, crossing the centerline of the street, for the purpose of parking on said street.”

Schneider explained that drivers wishing to drop students off on the south curb of H Avenue should turn east from Sixth Street.

“We recommend they come from the west and drop off on the south side and not cross traffic,” Schneider said. “We’re trying to change the way some people have been doing it.”

Schneider did not rule out issuing citations if the problem persists.

The parking problem has been discussed at recent Kalona City Council meetings as well.

“We’ve met with the sheriff’s office and school officials about this issue,” City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said at a recent council meeting.
