The 2017 Washington County Fair is in the books. Patrons, exhibitors, and livestock alike all survived the sweltering heat, intermixed with some odd strong storms, to make the fair a success.

The festivities kicked off in earnest with the 2017 Washington County Fair Queen Competition. Makenzi Marek earned the honor for the 2017 campaign, taking the mantle from Anna Pence. Marek’s crowning made her the second Marek to win the competition recently, with Lexi Marek winning in 2012.

The night also served as the major launching point of another campaign as Fair Board Director Dave Sieren began the information campaign for the construction of a new cattle barn. The aim is to completely replace the fairground’s more than 70-year old barns and give the county the option of further expanding the barns in the future.

From there, it was out of the cool conditions of the air conditioned hall and into the sweltering heat as fair exhibits really kicked it into high gear during the week. Only the odd thunderstorm, which delayed the market beef show temporarily, provided a brief escape from heat indexes that reached into the triple digits.
