ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

After the first week of district play in Class A and Class 2A, the area football playoff picture is still up in the air.

Despite an 0-4 start to the season, the Golden Hawks still remain in the playoff picture and hunt for a district title. Highland’s loss in the district opener to BGM doesn’t hurt as bad with the new RPI system in place.

Mid-Prairie

Class 2A District 6 is essentially a toss-up at this point. Mid-Prairie, Williamsburg and Albia were winners in the first week of district play. Mid-Prairie is 1-4 overall, Williamsburg 2-3 and Albia 2-3.

Since the district won’t produce an at-large contender, it essentially puts Mid-Prairie in a must-win situation the rest of the year. Mid-Prairie faces Williamsburg this week and if the Golden Hawks pull off a win they will be 2-0 and in a solid spot. The BCMoore computer predictions put Mid-Prairie as a two-touchdown underdog to the Raiders, but has them currently favored in their three other games this season.

Highland

Highland will need some help to win the district title, but still has a shot at an at-large spot. The Huskies sat at No. 1 in the RPI rankings in Class A before the loss due to the strength of non-conference record by Class A District 6.

To win the district they will need to go undefeated the rest of the year, starting off this week against a tough Pekin team, and get some help with BGM losses. BGM’s two toughest games remaining this season will come against 4-1 Pekin and 3-2 Durant.
