Going into last Tuesday’s Linn-Mar Invitational, the Mid-Prairie girls golf team had some nerves about playing against bigger competition.

Those nerves quickly faded and Mid-Prairie posted a 408 team score to beat out four Cedar Rapids metro schools and Pleasant Valley to place eighth in the 13-team field.

“This is always a great event for the kids to get into, even though they sometimes are a bit nervous given the size of the schools that they are going up against,” Mid-Prairie girls golf coach Tracy McArtor said.”

The tournament, played at Hunters Ridge in Marion, saw Mid-Prairie shoot a 196 team score on the front nine and 212 on the back nine. McArtor said with the touch hazards on the back side the 16-stroke difference makes sense.

Paige Slabaugh led the way for Mid-Prairie at 95 strokes with Abbi Patterson just one behind at 96. Georgia Nisly shot a 104, Kendra Schaefer a 113, Emma Mattes a 126 and Alison Yoder 127 stokes.

McArtor said he’s really happy with how the team is coming together and not ever satisfied with their scores.

“They talk about where they could have improved on their round and ask to work on specific parts of their game at the next practice,” McArtor said.
