ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Art students at Mid-Prairie West Elementary School will have some of their work on display for a long time to come.

On Tuesday morning, the student body gathered outside the main entrance to the school for a dedication of three ceramic student-made totem poles.

“This is a piece of public art created by the students of the Mid-Prairie West art club,” Principal Bill Poock said. “This is a special piece of art. Anyone who comes to Mid-Prairie West Elementary School will see these totem poles and know that this means us.”

Poock said that individual students from the art club crafted each piece of clay that make up the totem poles. This was part of the club’s spring project.

“They were each fired so they will last in the rain, snow and weather that we have here in Iowa,” Poock said.

Each piece represents a part of Mid-Prairie West Elementary School, the communities of Wellman and Kalona, as well as the state of Iowa, Poock said.

During the ceremony, every student who helped craft a piece of the totem poles gathered with the poles and received a round of applause from their fellow students.
