ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Lone Tree school board narrowly approved a sharing arrangement with the Highland school district where Superintendent Ken Crawford will split his time 50-50 between the two districts.

The board approved the sharing arrangement on a 3-2 vote, with board President Christina Magruder and board member Josh Zaruba cast dissenting votes.

Magruder said the districts could have shared positions other than the superintendent to achieve the same budget savings while Zaruba said he favored a two-year agreement rather than the three years called for in the motion that was approved.

The split on the board reflected the split in the community members who spoke on the issue. Eight people spoke with four in support of the sharing agreement and four opposing it.

The arrangement is not final yet. It still needs to be approved by the Highland board; a formal agreement needs to be drafted, and that agreement needs to be approved by both boards.

By sharing positions with other districts, the Lone Tree district can get state funding equivalent to 21 additional students. The district also saves half of the superintendent’s salary plus the parts of salaries of other shared positions.
