ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree

Residents of Lone Tree’s Pioneer Park Care Center took advantage of last week’s beautiful weather to take a trip, July 25, out to Mary’s Farm Sanctuary just north of Lone Tree to visit with the animals and enjoy cookies and lemonade outside in the shade.

Such outings are a feature of the Care Center’s activity program. Keeping residents engaged and busy is an important aspect of care, and the change in scenery offered by these trips offers a change of pace that residents look forward to. Melissa McKeen, the Care Center’s activities director, organizes a bus outing once a week, weather permitting. These trips are to anywhere residents might be interested in visiting and can range from shopping trips to local attractions to places like Mary’s Farm where visitors can interact with friendly dogs and cats, miniature horses, a miniature mule, donkeys, and a goat. Tink, a tiny teacup rescue of indeterminate breed, is especially fond of being held and will very quickly pass into a contented sleep snuggled in the arms of anyone who wants to hold her.

The Care Center also has people coming in at least twice a month to provide entertainment. Anything involving music is especially popular, There’s a social hour Friday afternoons and on Thursday it’s Bingo. The Center also serves holiday meals for residents and their families, usually serving 125-150 people.

“We keep residents engaged because we don’t want them to be bored”, said McKeen, “Socialization and being active is good to keep the mind active along with keeping people mobile.”

During the school year, Lone Tree second graders help with socializing by choosing a “grandparent” and coming to visit every week.
