ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Highland started out their conference dual slate 2-0 and senior Cory Stewart won his 100th match with a first-period pin.

Stewart, who had first-period pins in both of his matches on the night was crucial to the team’s 27-26 win over Van Buren and 41-18 win over Mediapolis.

In their narrow win over Van Buren, the Huskies used their own bonus points while limiting Van Buren in their wins. Highland scored pins in four of their five wins while Van Buren didn’t pin a Highland wrestler during the dual.

Highland sealed the dual at 106 pounds, where Highland went into the match up 21-20. Yahir Jiminez pinned Megan Heisel in 1:01, giving Highland a 27-20 lead headed into 113 pounds. A Highland forfeit shortened the win to just one point.

Bradley Rodgers earned a pin at heavyweight, Stewart pinned his opponent at 152, Brady Hahn won by fall at 145 and Dan Burton won at 182 pounds in a 5-1 decision.

Burton took a 2-0 lead in the first period and the only point of the second period was an escape from Burton after choosing the bottom position. With a 3-0 lead, Van Buren’s Taylor Bartholomew scored an escape but Burton scored another takedown to seal the match.

In a 41-18 win over Mediapolis, Highland took five of six contested matches and gave up two forfeits.

Jordan Sosa earned a 6-4 win in overtime, taking down Caden Benz for the win at 160 pounds. Jimenez won by technical fall in the third period 17-2 at 106 pounds, Justin Sosa won a decision 13-9 at 195 pounds, using a sequence of an escape, takedown and three-point nearfall in the second period to separate himself from his opponent.
