At their meeting Monday, Sept. 18, the Kalona City Council discussed the need to clean up Sharon Hill Cemetery. Kalona City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh said he had recently mowed and weed-whacked at the cemetery and noticed how cluttered the area was getting.

“There’s already a lot of stuff in the cemetery, around the stones, and there’s starting to be more,” Schlabaugh said. “We will be doing a cemetery clean-up to get back where we need to be.”

According to Kalona City Council Resolution number 2013, there are three rules decorations of burial sites at the Sharon Hill Cemetery in Kalona must follow:

All decorations must be attached to headstones. Any decorations not meeting this criteria will be subject to removal.

Memorial decorations will be removed the Saturday following said Memorial Day.

No Live plantings may be placed on burial sites.

“We’re not going to toss anything, we’ll keep items and decorations for 30 days so people can retrieve them if they like,” Schlabaugh said.

Decorations should be off by Oct. 15, and the City will start cleaning up Oct. 16.
