DES MOINES — Floyd Evans started his kick with 400 meters left in the Class 2A boys 3200 meter run. Running through his mind at the time was whether he had enough in the tank.

But the tank never emptied and Floyd Evans cruised his way to a state title in the race with a time of 9:42.34, an eight second margin over the next finisher.

“I kind of made my move out of the 400 and thought 'oh no maybe it's a little to early', but thank God it wasn't,” Evans said after the win.

The time was a three second personal best for Evans, who said he came into the race wanting to match pace with Reece Smith of Garner-Hayfield/Ventura, and then kick near the end.

Smith came in with a best of 9:31.31 in the event, his time at the Drake Relays. He finished with a time of 9:50.11.

While the win is obviously a plus, Evans said his goals were simply to perform the best he could for a select few groups: God, his family and his team.

“I'm just happy that I get to be a state champ, but even if I didn't get first I know that I'm a champion in God's eyes,” Evans said.

“Coming into this meet I knew I had to do this for myself, for my family and for my team. They’ve all done so much for me.”

His win gives Mid-Prairie 10 points in the team race.

Evans will run in the distance medley on Friday and the 1600 meter run on Saturday. He comes into the 1600 with the top seed.
