Trek Fest was over a month ago. At Monday night’s City Council meeting, Kevin Meller discussed the success of this year’s event.

The weather turned out well and other than a couple of hiccups, everything ran smoothly, Meller said.

There were over 20,000 people in attendance this year. This number was high, especially because Riverside was competing with Iowa City’s block party on the same night.

The City Council commented on the inflatables this year and how parents liked them. They gave kids something to do and were free so parents could spend more money on other things.

Councilperson Robert Weber asked if carnival rides will be brought in the future, and if not, what will be done with that space.

Meller said if he is in charge, they will not do carnival rides. Inflatables are less of an expense and parents don’t have to spend money on them, he said. The space used for the rides will be used for more parking in the future.

The City Council also discussed whether to give money to the Riverside Ball Association for the girls’ softball team that attended the World Series in Florida.

Councilperson Jeanine Redlinger argued that this is something that will bring people to Riverside and help recognize the community.

Riverside Ball Association donated $1,500 with the expectation that the City Council would donate $500.

Council Person Robert Weber made a motion to pay the $500. Councilperson Jeanine Redlinger seconded the motion. Councilperson Tom Sexton opposed it, but the motion still passed.
