KALONA-- Marie Hostetler has been named the Gatorade Iowa Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year after a record-setting sophomore season.

Hostetler currently owns the state meet girls 5k record with a time of 17:51.2. That time earned her a individual championship in the Class 2A meet and helped Mid-Prairie to a team championship in Class 2A as well.

According to the release from Gatorade, Hostetler is now entered as a finalist for the Gatorade National Girls Cross County Runner of the Year, which will be announced in January.

“Marie was hands down the best female runner in the state this fall,” Dan Sauser, head coach of Monticello High, said in a release. “Marie has incredible leg turnover and endurance that I’ve seen in very few runners.”

The release notes Hostetler's 4.0 GPA and her volunteer work with the Special Olympics and as a youth track coach.

At the Foot Locker Midwest Regional she finished 22nd and won seven of 10 races during her fall season.

Marie Hostetler now joins her sister Anna Hostetler as Mid-Prairie athletes that have won the award. Anna Hostetler won the award for the 2016-2017 school year.

Marie Hostetler will now be awarded a $1,000 grant to donate to a cause of her choosing.
