ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

It was a whirlwind weekend for 6-year-old Quinn Stumpf and her family.

Stumpf was honored during pregame ceremonies at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City as the honorary University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital Kid Captain.

“It was definitely an amazing whirlwind,” Quinn’s mother April Stumpf said. “It was emotionally overwhelming in a positive way.”

The Kid Captain program is a partnership between the Hawkeyes and the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where a child is chosen as an honorary captain of each Hawkeye football game.

Quinn, a first-grader at Highland Elementary School, was born with a genetic disease so rare that it doesn’t have a name. A gene mutation, known as SPATA5, has resulted in various medical conditions, including epilepsy, blindness, hearing loss, dystonia, and opisthotonos, a condition which causes severe and rigid muscle spasms that result in backward arching of her head, neck, and spine.
