1917 - 2017

Paul M. Scherrer, 100, of Riverside, died Monday, Dec. 25, 2017, at Mercy Hospice in Iowa City. Services were held Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Riverside. Burial with military honors was in the St. Vincent’s Cemetery in Riverside. A memorial fund has been established for St. Vincent’s Cemetery, Riverside First Responders or Iowa City Hospice.

Paul Melvin Scherrer was born Nov. 15, 1917, in rural Riverside, the son of Charles and Philomenia (Sueppel) Scherrer. Paul married Dorothy Prehoda Sept. 21, 1936. Dorothy (Prehoda) Scherrer passed Sept. 30, 1954. Paul married Ida Dorothy Skubal June 23, 1955. Ida Dorothy (Skubal) Scherrer passed Sept. 12, 2014. He graduated from St. Mary’s High School in 1935. Paul received a certificate upon completing courses in refrigeration and air conditioning at RSES.

Paul served with the Marine Corps at Pei-tai-ho Beach in North China, near the Mongolian border, during World War II from 1944 to 1946. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 842. Paul operated a service station on the corner of Bloomington St. and Gilbert St. in Iowa City from 1937 to 1938. Paul worked at the University of Iowa maintenance plant until his retirement on Dec. 31, 1979.

Paul had many interests: woodworking, stamp-collecting, hunting, gardening, bowling, playing cards, following sports and visiting with family and friends.

He is survived by sons: Edward (Deb) Scherrer of North Liberty and Michael (Coleen) Scherrer of Riverside; daughter: Maureen (Leonard) Corpman of Cedar Falls; 12 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife: Dorothy (Prehoda) Scherrer; his second wife: Ida Dorothy (Skubal) Scherrer; a daughter: Janice Grimm; a son-in-law: Grant Grimm; a son in infancy; one sister: Clementine (and her husband, John) Strabala; two brothers: Elmer (and his wife, Wilma) Scherrer and Virgil (and his wife, Shirley) Scherrer; and several nieces and nephews.

Beatty-Peterseim Funeral Service assisted the family with arrangements.
