ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Kalona

The surrounding timber at Windmill Ridge Campground over the weekend was alive with the summer sounds of singing birds and chirping insects, while in the campground a different kind of music was being heard. It was the annual Kalona Bluegrass Festival.

Sitting in a circle were four musicians jamming to their favorite bluegrass tunes. On the banjo was Keith Yoder from Maryville, Tenn.; Darrell Yoder on the upright bass from Comanche; Sammy Byerly on guitar from Yorkville, Ill.; and Galen Briggs on guitar from New Virginia.

At first, the four could easily be mistaken for one of the acts with the way their instruments blended in so easily together. The Yoders are members of the McPunk Brothers band, a perennial favorite of the festival. Byerly and Briggs occasionally hook up with the other two, as well as each other, at various bluegrass events where they can relax and get the chance to play with other musicians.

Keith joked that the first time Briggs came home late because he attended and then jammed at a bluegrass festival, his wife asked him where he’d been. Briggs answered joyfully that he’d found his tribe.
