ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Lone Tree

By the first weekend in December, Lone Tree was all decked out for Christmas. Employees of the local Rural Electric Cooperative had the decorations up on Devoe Street.

Homes all over town were bright with lights, and the Chamber of Commerce had its third annual Lone Tree Christmas Tree decorating party.

Fifty years ago, the town’s Christmas tree was erected in the middle of the intersection of Jayne and Devoe streets.

Needless to say, semi trucks and decorated trees made for a bad mix, and this setup only lasted two or three years.

After that, a town Christmas tree was an on-again, off- again thing, and it’s not certain where the tree was actually located each year. Three years ago, the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce, headed by Russ Forbes, decided to resurrect the custom, make it a yearly event and involve as many people as possible in the festivities.

Sunday afternoon the vacant lot on the corner of Jayne and Devoe was filled to overflowing with people gathered to decorate a tree donated by Dave Ewers.

Randy Yakish, Joe Geiger and Chris Westfall cut the tree down, transported it to town and put it up.

Ornaments were donated and hot chocolate was provided by Pioneer Park. Joanne Havel made cookies, and Barb Troa helped hand them out.

Tanya Judge provided music as carols were sung. There were games organized by Luanne Lukemyres like ring toss wreathes and catching candy canes with a fishing pole for children. And, much to the delight of the little kids, Santa came in a fire truck.
