ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Iowa Mennonite senior Avery Blauvelt signed on the dotted line last week to play softball at Wisconsin Lutheran College.

The 1,200-student school in Milwaukee, Wisc., wasn’t on Blauvelt’s radar when she started her college search, but after a visit last fall she knew it was the place for her.

“It all fell into place, and it’s just the perfect school,” Blauvelt said. “I’m so happy that they were at that tournament and that a teammate of mine had them there.”

After meeting with the coach at that tournament, Blauvelt decided to take a visit to Wisconsin Lutheran in early October 2017. After they arrived there, it didn’t take long for Blauvelt to realize her gut was telling her to go there.

“My mom went with me the first time we went up to Wisconsin and we were both just throughout the day saying ‘this is where I’m going to school,’” Blauvelt said.

Wisconsin Lutheran is a member of the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference, a member of NCAA Division III athletics. Blauvelt said the school will allow her to grow in three aspects of her life — faith, academics and athletics.

In her junior high school year Blauvelt had a .471 batting average in 51 plate appearances. In her four years of high school play Blauvelt has caught 19 runners stealing.

The decision to play four more years of college ball fulfills a dream Blauvelt said she’s had since seeing college softball on TV as a young child.

“It’s really so surreal, I can’t believe that I’m going to try and fulfill my dream to play college softball,” she said. “It started with (Wellman) town ball and then club softball.”

Blauvelt has one more softball season ahead of her with Iowa Mennonite this summer before she’ll head off to Milwaukee in the fall.
