Kenneth J. Egli

1936 - 2017

Kenneth James Egli, 80, of Kalona, died January 4, 2017 at Parkview Manor in Wellman, Iowa after a short struggle with brain cancer. According to his wishes, there will be no funeral service. Memorials may be left to Water For Life in Kalona, Iowa or a charity of choice.

He was born to Edward and Sadie (Musselman) Egli in Gilmore City, Iowa December 19, 1936. He was the youngest of 10 children. He attended a one-room country school and then public school in Gilmore City. The family moved to Manson, Iowa in 1947. He graduated from Manson High School in 1954. He graduated with a BA in Elementary Education from Goshen College in 1958 and became a teacher. He received his MA from Northeast Missouri State Teachers College in 1967.

His first teaching job was in Osceola, Indiana. He taught for two years in Pulguillas, Puerto Rico as a service for the Relief and Service Committee of the Mennonite Church. He taught elementary school in Grundy Center and Ames school districts and as a substitute teacher in southeast Iowa for many years after retiring from full time work.

Ken enjoyed traveling, gardening, raising sheep and cooking. He participated in several mission trips and was good at meeting new people on his travels and learning about their culture and interests. He was a member of the Lions Club in Washington, Iowa and did many volunteer projects including landscaping and gardening at the Crooked Creek Christian Camp and cashiering at the Crowded Closet, a Mennonite-based thrift store. He loved to sing and was a member of several choruses during his life time.

Ken is survived by one brother: Dr. Gene (Nell) Egli; and numerous relatives and friends.
