ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

Melissa Mullinnix has reason to be proud as she shared the news with a group of friends at Julie’s “Get Wired” Coffee Shop the morning after the Memorial Day holiday.

Her grandson, Jaxon, is spending this summer in Costa Rica attending EARTH University as a World Food Prize Borlaug-Ruan International intern.

Jaxon left early in the morning on May 27 and will be in Costa Rica for eight weeks. He has promised his friends on Facebook “an abundance of blog posts, Snapchat stories and other neat things from my adventures!” And, from his fellows and his teacher, Bridget Mahoney, at school, “Lone Tree FFA could not be more proud of Jaxon and his accomplishments.”

The Borlaug-Ruan International internship provides high school students an all-expenses-paid, eight-week hands-on experience, working with scientists and policymakers at agricultural research centers around the world in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

The Borlaug-Ruan International internship gives a student an opportunity to participate in original research projects while getting a firsthand view of pressing food security issues and nutritional problems in poverty-stricken areas of the developing world.

Any student who has participated in the World Food Prize Global Youth Institute and is a U.S. citizen or permanent resident of the U.S. is eligible to apply. Students can apply from their junior year in high school through their freshman year in college. There is no stipend but all expenses are paid by the World Food Prize Foundation.

Jaxon is a lifelong resident of Lone Tree and the son of Brian and Melissa Mullinnix. He will be a senior at Lone Tree High School next year.
