ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

When Jodie Schimke joined Boxcar Treasures Antiques/Crafts/Collectibles in Washington as a vendor and confided that her dream was to own a shop like it someday, she probably didn’t think “someday” would come quite as soon as it has.

Carol Riggan of Riverside opened the initial location back in December at 307 East 5th Street in Washington. Just six months later next to the Four Corners in Ainsworth with Schimke at the helm.

“I joined Carol at Boxcar Treasures as a vendor …and then pretty quickly I told her that was my dream as well and we joined forces, basically here we are two stores later,” Schimke said.

Schimke said her grandfather was the one who first inspired her love of antiques as she began her collection of unique items.

“My grandfather was a trash man in Beacon, Iowa, and he had the garbage business for a lot of years and my best things came out of the garbage,” she said. “Then I started to repurpose my own items.”

A favorite past time of hers is repurposing old wooden spools and making clocks and furniture out of them. She also enjoys collecting tins, over 300 ranging from advertising materials to tobacco tins.
