ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

The Wellman Garden Club finished its season by touring the “flora” gardens north of Wellman.

Melanie Schweitzer and her husband bought their house in 1991. They have repaired, remodeled, and added extensive flora all around the grounds.

A butterfly garden featured butterfly bush, poppies, yarrow, roses, lilies, snow daisies, lambs ear, sage, lantana and coral bells. A variety of hostas occupied much of the shady space. There was also salvia, lichnis, hydrangea, boxwood, bottle brush buckeye, May apple, wild ginger and bloodroot. Beautiful trees included a tri-color beech tree, a saucer magnolia and a very old maple.

Schweitzer worked at Iowa City Landscaping for almost 30 years. Then, she began doing her own floral design on the grounds around their home.

Recently, she began doing landscape installations and event florals. She is very talented at floral and landscape design.

The meeting concluded inside her workshop, where she served iced tea and cookies. With seven members and twp guests present, there was a brief business meeting.

The garden club will not meet in July or August, but will begin a new season Sept. 21.
