ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

New ordinances pertaining to the operation of various types of small vehicles in the city of Wellman are now in effect.

At its Nov. 19 meeting, the Wellman City Council OK’d the final passage of a series of ordinances on the second reading. Council members unanimously agreed to waive a third reading of the ordinances.

Council member Shannon McCain, who was not at the Nov. 5 meeting when the first reading of the ordinances passed, spoke out against the changes to the city’s golf cart ordinance.

McCain did not agree with setting the golf cart operating age at 16 with a valid driver’s license.

“A moped goes way faster than a golf cart,” McCain said. “Yet, they can drive a moped with a school permit, but not a golf cart.”

City Administrator Kelly Litwiller pointed out that the ordinance is in line with state law.

“It’s out of our hands,” Litwiller said. “It’s state code.”

In addition to the golf cart ordinance, the council approved other ordinances.
