ARTICLE DESCRIPTION:

A former Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk had the opportunity to take part in history for the third time this year.

U.S. Army Cpl. Caleb Runquist served as a body bearer for former President George H.W. Bush when his casket was brought to lie in state in the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Dec. 3 and back out on Dec. 5.

“The part I took part in was carrying the late president’s casket up the Capitol steps and into the Rotunda and then back out 48 hours later,” Runquist said.

Runquist, who served as a body bearer for Billy Graham and Sen. John McCain this year, said he was honored to be a part of services honoring Bush.

“To participate in the late president’s funeral was such an honor and to be capable to carry his casket is something I can’t put into words,” Runquist said. “This was a man that served our country for many years in many different ways, and my team had roughly 15 minutes to give the utmost respect, and we did our best.”

Runquist’s team got the attention of the late president’s son, former President George W. Bush.

“President George W. Bush let us know that he was very pleased with job we did,” Runquist said. “Knowing the family is happy with how well we honored the fallen is the best feeling.”

Runquist, a 2016 Mid-Prairie High School graduate, has served as a body bearer for two years. He is assigned to the 3rd United States Infantry Regiment the “Old Guard.”
